Photo Restoration
Three restoration approaches — from millisecond-fast touch-ups to full AI pipelines — so you always have the right tool for your photo's condition.
Old Photo Restoration AI
Best for severely aged, faded, or discolored family photos that need a complete AI-powered restoration.
- On the home screen, click Old Photo Restoration (marked with the AI badge).
- Click Import and select your photo.
- (Optional) Check the AI Denoise box if your photo has heavy film grain or digital noise. Leave it off for cleaner photos — it saves processing time.
- Click Start Processing. The AI pipeline automatically runs five stages: smoothing, denoising (if enabled), color enhancement, 4× upscaling, and final sharpening.
- Review the side-by-side comparison. Click Save to export as a high-quality PNG.
Fast Old Photo Restoration
Best for lightly aged or slightly faded photos that just need a quick refresh — no AI wait time, results appear in milliseconds.
- On the home screen, click Fast Old Photo Restoration.
- Click Import and select your photo.
- Click Start — results appear instantly.
- Compare the before-and-after panels. Click Save to export.
Classic Photo Restoration
Best for high-resolution scans from museums, archives, or professional scanners (600+ DPI). Preserves original resolution — no AI upscaling — for archival-grade authenticity.
- On the home screen, click Classic Photo Restoration.
- Click Import and select your high-resolution scan.
- (Optional) Toggle Scratch Repair on if your scan has physical scratches or fold lines.
- Click Start. The pipeline automatically detects halftone patterns, analyzes image quality, and applies targeted corrections — no manual adjustments needed.

AI Enhancement
Two dedicated AI features that push your photos beyond what traditional editing can achieve — 4× super-resolution upscaling and intelligent black-and-white colorization.
Photo Upscale 4× AI
Best for low-resolution or compressed images that need more detail — ideal for printing, cropping, or sharing at higher quality.
- On the home screen, click Photo Upscale 4× (marked with the AI badge).
- Click Import and select your image.
- Click Start Processing. The AI model enlarges your image to 4× its original dimensions while recovering sharp, natural-looking details.
- Compare the before-and-after panels. Click Save to export.
2048 × 1536 → 8192 × 6144. For very large inputs (>3 megapixels), a processing time estimate appears below the badge.
AI Colorization AI
Best for black-and-white or grayscale photographs — watch history come alive in natural, vivid color with zero manual painting.
- On the home screen, click AI Colorization (marked with the AI badge).
- Click Import and select your black-and-white photo.
- (Optional) Select a Subject Type — Portrait, Landscape, Architecture, or General — to help the AI pick the best colors.
- (Optional) Adjust the Color Strength and Warmth sliders to fine-tune the result.
- Click Start Colorization. The app first enhances contrast (~50ms), then runs the AI color model. You'll see the enhanced black-and-white preview immediately.
- Review the before-and-after panels. Click Save to export.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an internet connection to use PhotoRestore Pro?
No. All AI models and processing run entirely offline on your device. After installation, you never need an internet connection. This means your photos never leave your computer — complete privacy, no cloud dependency.
What image formats are supported?
Import: PNG, JPEG, WebP, BMP, TIFF
Export: PNG (default, lossless), JPEG (adjustable quality), WebP (adjustable quality), BMP, TIFF
Why is AI processing slower on my computer?
AI models use your GPU for acceleration via ONNX Runtime with DirectML. If your GPU doesn't support DirectML or has limited VRAM, the app automatically switches to CPU processing — slower but works on any Windows PC. A DirectML-compatible GPU is recommended for the best experience.
Can I process multiple photos at once?
Batch processing is available for two tools: Batch Watermark (up to 50 photos) and Batch Image Resize (up to 50 photos). All other features process one photo at a time for maximum quality. You can chain features — process in one tool, return home, and open another — your progress is preserved.
Will my original photo be overwritten?
Never. PhotoRestore Pro always saves results as new files. Your original images are never modified.
What does the AI Denoise checkbox do?
In Old Photo Restoration, AI Denoise runs a deep learning noise-reduction model before the main restoration pipeline. Enable it for photos with heavy grain or digital noise. Leave it off for cleaner photos — it saves significant processing time.
How do I cancel a processing operation?
Click the Cancel button in the toolbar. The current operation stops and the app returns to its ready state. You can start again immediately.
Is my data collected or shared?
No data collection of any kind. PhotoRestore Pro does not include analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or any network communication. Every pixel of every image is processed exclusively in your computer's memory.
Which Windows versions are supported?
Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11 (64-bit). Both are fully supported.
Why do users choose PhotoRestore Pro over cloud-based alternatives?
Because PhotoRestore Pro solves a real, universal problem — restoring precious memories — without the friction of subscriptions, accounts, or cloud uploads. Your photos are processed entirely on your device: zero latency from uploads, complete privacy, and results that rival or exceed cloud-based services. It just works, right out of the box.
What's the difference between Fast and AI Old Photo Restoration?
Fast Restoration uses traditional image processing algorithms — results appear in milliseconds, ideal for lightly faded photos that just need a quick refresh. AI Restoration runs a full deep-learning pipeline (smoothing, denoising, color enhancement, 4× upscaling, sharpening) for 15–60 seconds, designed for severely aged or damaged photos. Choose based on your photo's condition, not your patience.
Can I use PhotoRestore Pro for commercial work?
Yes. Photos processed with PhotoRestore Pro can be used for commercial purposes — client work, prints, publishing, and social media. There are no usage restrictions or watermarks on exported images. The tool is yours; the results are yours.
How does DirectML acceleration affect processing speed?
DirectML uses your GPU's dedicated AI cores (where available) to accelerate ONNX Runtime inference. On a modern GPU, AI tools run 3–8× faster than CPU-only mode. The app automatically detects your hardware and selects the fastest backend — no manual configuration needed.
Does the app work on Windows on ARM (Snapdragon)?
PhotoRestore Pro is compiled for x64 architecture and runs on Windows 10/11 x64 editions. ARM-based Windows devices (e.g., Snapdragon X Elite) can run the app via x64 emulation, though AI processing speed may vary. Native ARM64 support is under evaluation for a future release.
How do I get a refund if I'm not satisfied?
All purchases are processed through the Microsoft Store, which provides a standard refund policy. You can request a refund directly from your Microsoft account's order history. We recommend trying the free trial first to ensure the app meets your needs before purchasing.
Tips for Best Results
General Tips
- Start with the highest quality source available. Even AI restoration works best with good data.
- Chain features for complex restorations. For example: Scratch Repair → Old Photo Restoration → Color Enhancement.
- Save intermediate results. Save after each feature so you can backtrack if needed.
- Lightly faded photos often look great with Fast Old Photo Restoration in under a second.
For Old Family Photos
- Scan at 300–600 DPI for best results from physical prints.
- For photos with both scratches and aging: Scratch Repair first, then Old Photo Restoration.
- Avoid AI Denoise for clean scans — it adds time with minimal benefit on noise-free photos.
For Black-and-White Colorization
- Choose the right Subject Type — Portrait for people, Landscape for nature, Architecture for buildings.
- Start with default settings, then fine-tune if needed.
- Grayscale photos with good contrast colorize better — use Fast Old Photo Restoration first if the image is flat.
For Batch Operations
- Test on 2–3 images first before processing all 50.
- Keep backups of originals in a separate folder as a safety net.
Troubleshooting
Quick fixes for common issues — most problems can be resolved in under a minute.
AI processing is very slow
- Make sure your GPU drivers are up to date (NVIDIA Game Ready / AMD Adrenalin / Intel Arc).
- Check that DirectML is available — the app logs the inference backend on startup.
- Close other GPU-intensive applications (video editors, games, browsers with WebGL).
- Reduce input image size — processing a 12MP photo on CPU takes longer than a 3MP one.
App crashes or won't start
- Verify your system meets the minimum requirements (Windows 10 64-bit, 4 GB RAM).
- Reinstall from the Microsoft Store — this ensures all dependencies are correctly packaged.
- If using an antivirus, temporarily add PhotoRestore Pro to the exclusion list.
Colorization results look unnatural
- Try a different Subject Type — Portrait mode handles skin tones better than Landscape.
- Reduce Color Strength for a subtler effect, then increase gradually.
- Ensure the input photo has good contrast — run Fast Old Photo Restoration first if the image is flat or washed out.
